Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton has charged a local hypnotherapist with three felony counts related to an alleged sexual assault of a 48-year-old patient under his care.
John Gary Tomlinson, 65, of Flint, was arraigned Wednesday, May 3 on one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of unlawful imprisonment, and one count of assault by strangulation related to an incident that occurred at his office in Grand Blanc Township on April 17, 2017.
According to investigative reports, Grand Blanc Township police officers were dispatched to Tomlinson’s hypnotherapy office on Holly Road after a patient Tomlinson was treating reported that Tomlinson had sexually assaulted her while she was undergoing her fourth hypnotherapy session.
John Potbury, deputy chief assistant prosecutor with the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office, said three other women had made allegations against Tomlinson in the past. Only one of those three resulted in charges, however, those charges were later dismissed.
“Our office did review those allegations and did not find that there was enough probable cause evidence at the time to authorize any criminal charges,” said Potbury. “To clarify, the victim in the present case was not one of the three prior individuals who came forward.”
Since news broke on Wednesday, Potbury said other women have contacted their office and police, indicating that they would like to talk to someone about their past experiences with Tomlinson.
He posted the required $25,000 cash bond and was released. His office can remain open.
A probable cause conference has been scheduled for May 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Genesee County 67th District Court.
Local attorney Michael Manley will be representing Tomlinson.
