The Power of Preying: Why Men Target Women in the Workplace

Why Do Women Get Depressed More Than Men?The recent firestorm of allegations made by several female actors of unwanted sexual advances and rape seems to have exposed yet another powerful man, Harvey Weinstein, as a sexual predator. Like that of his counterparts Bill Cosby, Louis CK and Anthony Weiner, Weinstein’s predation appears to have been fully calculated. Different than the garden-variety rapist who looks for opportunity in the moment, then lunges in an adrenaline high at his victim, such men in power deliberately orchestrate a scenario forcing their prey to service their deepest, darkest perversions and to remain silent.

These men have ample opportunity to groom the innocent by garnering their trust, seducing them with false promises, and banking that their terror of exposure will keep the victims from exposing the perpetrator. The predator, of course, knows that where he leads, the vulnerable prey must follow because they want or need something from him. When the predator finally strikes, the victim becomes disorientated — a trusted, admired other has violated her. Sexual acts happen swiftly, sending the victim into a haze of confusion or freezing her ability to move or to determine what’s okay and what’s not in that one moment.

Purposely evoking shock and fear in another is an act of violence. And masturbating or showering in front of a female who doesn’t want to watch exemplifies that act. Wielding enormous power, such a perpetrator controls his victim in a cat-and-mouse dynamic that, to his sadistic delight and sexual arousal, psychologically tortures her. The more she begs him to stop or exhibits humiliation, the more aroused he gets.

Scholar Robert Stoller (1986) called perversion “an erotic form of hatred,” and deconstructed the cocktail of forces driving it: the senses of sexual inadequacy, of shame, and of entitlement. For who else but a man who feels profoundly (if unconsciously) inadequate would find nonconsensual, non-connective acts arousing, and would indulge in them?

Almost universally, such perpetrators have suffered grave verbal, emotional, or physical abuse as children. They have a shame-based personality that manifests itself in a shame-based sexuality. When a male in power “acts out” his sexuality, it means just that: He is regulating his long-buried emotions via rage (generally at the offending gender) by acting it out in the mime language of sex. Patrick Carnes (2001) called this phenomenon “eroticized rage,” pointing to the disowned, but carried, anger and panic that distort trauma survivors’ sexuality. And sex fused with aggression powerfully activates the reward system of the brain, fueling the suppressed abusive memories to be enacted and re-enacted in real time.

When early hostile revenge fantasies become forged with danger, revenge and orgasm swirl together to create an overwhelming internal “high” for the perpetrator. These hateful sexual acts reduce another human being to body parts to be used for personal gratification and strip away any empathy for the other.  This “erotic form of hatred” marries the desire to harm with rule-breaking sexual behaviors that the offender boasts to himself is admirable “risk-taking.” He misinterprets as sexual excitement the intense pulsing fear of being caught, combined with the unconscious hope of ultimate triumph over his long-buried trauma.

Anger propels predatory sexual behavior, which feeds on resentment, the justification of revenge, and a willingness to break rules. In other words, the predator utilizes his correct sense that he’s been wronged and that life is unfair to prove his incorrect entitlement to take what he wants, when he wants it. Childhood abuse is the richest soil for such resentments, nourishing the view that the world is unresponsive to his needs and that he will always be betrayed. His perception of having been victimized sets the stage for the development of both an inadequate sense of self and a sense of entitlement, priming and justifying acting out his pain sexually. Unable or afraid to be vulnerable, he can barely tend to his most basic affective needs. Thus he’s left emotionally cut-off, and engages in outrageous behaviors, believing that he deserves his pleasures and that he will never be caught. While this level of risk-taking demonstrates an irrational sense of invincibility, the predator’s arousal depends on increasingly hazardous behaviors, like victimizing others. Profoundly wounded in childhood and wholly defended against it, he dismisses any value in openness to others. In fact, others’ vulnerability marks them as prey because his own vulnerability feels shameful and loathsome.

The proverbial casting couch has been around at least since the inception of moving pictures. Patriarchal views embed sexism, not just in Hollywood but in all industries and in domestic spheres. Whether powerful or not, men perpetrate sexual crimes against less-powerful women in and out of the workplace every day, sometimes for sport, sometimes to knock them down a notch. Some forms of sexual harassment take cover in subtlety: inappropriately sexualized humor and conversation, unsolicited judgment of someone’s appearance or demeanor, unwelcome touch.

More often than not, when women report sexual harassment in the workplace, others (including women) doubt them, creating a secondary victimization. In fact, as a culture we’ve become so inured to inappropriate sexual advances toward women that we think staring at their breasts or remarking on their attractiveness is the norm and shouldn’t be made into a “big deal.”

Perhaps the Weinstein case will prove to be a tipping point for women and for men who see them as human beings rather than as body parts or targets for conquest or exploitation. When women in the workplace compete with each other less and support and believe one another more, they will start talking candidly and listening closely. Rejecting a divide-and-conquer culture, women (and men who honor them) can stand together in solidarity to speak their truth against micro-aggressions and egregious behaviors. Then, maybe, a more egalitarian, respectful world will start to emerge.

Ethical issues raised around deep brain stimulation (DBS) research

Researchers grapple with the ethics of testing brain implants (Science):

“In 2003, neurologist Helen Mayberg of Emory University in Atlanta began to test a bold, experimental treatment for people with severe depression, which involved implanting metal electrodes deep in the brain in a region called area 25. The initial data were promising; eventually, they convinced a device company, St. Jude Medical in Saint Paul, to sponsor a 200-person clinical trial dubbed BROADEN.

This month, however, Lancet Psychiatry reported the first published data on the trial’s failure. The study stopped recruiting participants in 2012, after a 6-month study in 90 people failed to show statistically significant improvements between those receiving active stimulation and a control group, in which the device was implanted but switched off.

Although that decision was “game over” for BROADEN, the story wasn’t finished for some 44 patients who asked to keep the implants in their brains, and the clinicians responsible for their long-term care,  Mayberg explained last week to colleagues at a meeting on the ethical dilemmas of brain stimulation research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland…A forthcoming report from the meeting will also examine other ethical issues researchers might need to consider, including the largely unknown, long-term effects of stimulation on the brain, and how to obtain proper consent from participants.”

The Study

Subcallosal cingulate deep brain stimulation for treatment-resistant depression: a multisite, randomised, sham-controlled trial (Lancet Psychiatry). From the abstract:

  • Background: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subcallosal cingulate white matter has shown promise as an intervention for patients with chronic, unremitting depression. To test the safety and efficacy of DBS for treatment-resistant depression, a prospective, randomised, sham-controlled trial was conducted.
  • Findings: …90 participants were randomly assigned to active (n=60) or sham (n=30) stimulation between April 10, 2008, and Nov 21, 2012. Both groups showed improvement, but there was no statistically significant difference in response during the double-blind, sham-controlled phase (12 [20%] patients in the stimulation group vs five [17%] patients in the control group). 28 patients experienced 40 serious adverse events; eight of these (in seven patients) were deemed to be related to the study device or surgery.
  • Interpretation: This study confirmed the safety and feasibility of subcallosal cingulate DBS as a treatment for treatment-resistant depression but did not show statistically significant antidepressant efficacy in a 6-month double-blind, sham-controlled trial. Future studies are needed to investigate factors such as clinical features or electrode placement that might improve efficacy.

A new study links over-activity in a small part of the brainstem to heightened arousal and reactivity, core symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Swedish researchers discovered the PTSD symptoms were associated with excessive brain activity in the locus coeruleus (LC), which is involved with physiological responses to stress and panic.

Dr. Christoph Mueller-Pfei and colleagues at the University of Zurich correlated brain imaging data with body responses. The new paper is the first to provide direct human evidence for a theory over 30 years old.

Pinpointing the origin of symptoms in the brain is a major step in efforts to improve treatment options for patients with the disorder.

“The authors are to be congratulated on imaging this part of the brain,” said Dr. John Krystal, Editor of Biological Psychiatry, the journal in which the study appears.

“Demonstrating the presence of LC hyperactivity in PTSD sets the stage for clarifying the relationship of LC activity to stress response, resilience, PTSD symptoms, and the treatment of PTSD,” he added.

In the study, first author Christoph Naegeli, also of University of Zurich, and colleagues analyzed 54 participants who had been exposed to trauma, about half of whom developed PTSD.

When the participants listened to random bursts of white noise, those who were diagnosed with PTSD had more frequent eye blinks, and increased heart rate, skin conductance and pupil area responses — indicators of the body’s autonomic response — than participants without PTSD.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain activity, Naegeli and colleagues found that patients with PTSD had larger brain responses in the LC and other regions wired to the LC that control alertness and motor preparation.

Researchers believe the increased brain activity and autonomic responses measured in the participants provides a biologically plausible explanation for hypervigilance and exaggerated startle responses in PTSD.

However, LC activation was not directly associated with arousal symptoms. Thus, direct links between LC hyperactivity and PTSD symptom severity still need to be demonstrated.

The study may also reveal new avenues for treating these common and disabling symptoms of PTSD.

“Our results suggest that targeting locus coeruleus system hyperactivity with new pharmacological or psychotherapeutic interventions are approaches worthy of further investigation,” said Mueller-Pfeiffer.

Bilingual Kids May Be Less Impulsive

New research discovers that for students in preschool, speaking two languages appears to be associated with improved inhibitory control.

University of Oregon researchers discovered young students with bilingual abilities were better able to stop a hasty reflexive response and instead select a more adaptive response.

The study used a longitudinal approach to examine the bilingual advantage hypothesis, which suggests that the demands associated with managing two languages confer cognitive advantages that extend beyond the language domain.

The study appears in the journal Developmental Science.

Researchers looked at a national sample of 1,146 Head Start children who were assessed for their inhibitory control at age 4, and then followed over an 18-month period.

The children were divided into three groups based on their language proficiency: Those who spoke only English; those who spoke both Spanish and English; and those who spoke only Spanish at the start of the study but were fluent in both English and Spanish at the follow up assessment.

“At the beginning of the study, the group that entered as already bilingual scored higher on a test of inhibitory control compared to the other two groups,” said the study’s lead author, Dr.  Jimena Santillán.

Follow-up assessments came at six and 18 months. Inhibitory control was assessed using a common pencil-tapping task, in which the participant is instructed to tap a pencil on a desk twice when the experimenter taps once, and vice-versa. This task requires the student to inhibit the impulse to imitate what the experimenter does, and then do the opposite activity instead.

Over the follow-up period, both the bilingual group and the monolingual-to-bilingual transition group showed more rapid inhibitory control development than the group of English-only speakers.

“Inhibitory control and executive function are important skills for academic success and positive health outcomes and well-being later in life,” said study co-author, Dr. Atika Khurana, a professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Human Services.

“The development of inhibitory control occurs rapidly during the preschool years,” she said. “Children with strong inhibitory control are better able to pay attention, follow instructions and take turns. This study shows one way in which environmental influences can impact the development of inhibitory control during younger years.”

Students in this study came from low socioeconomic status families, as is typical of Head Start samples. Such children are in a group known to be at-risk for poorer outcomes related to executive function skills. This population allowed the researchers to compare students from similar socioeconomic backgrounds but who had different language experiences.

Researchers also were able to control for other variables that could be associated with inhibitory control development, such as a child’s age and parenting practices.

The study’s design allowed researchers to focus on the effects of bilingual experience on inhibitory-control development during preschool years.

Previous studies have examined the effects of bilingualism on inhibitory control, but have done so with a focus on one point in time or development and have focused on smaller samples from mostly middle-class backgrounds, said Santillán.

“Many studies have addressed the bilingual advantage hypothesis,” she said. “However, the findings have been inconsistent. Part of the reason is the difficulty of randomly assigning participants to be bilingual or monolingual, which would be the ideal research design.”

The longitudinal approach allowed researchers to see how inhibitory control changed over time for children who were developing bilingualism during the same time period, as well as for those who were already bilingual with those who remained monolingual.

“This allowed us to get closer to capturing the dynamic nature of the development of bilingualism and inhibitory control, both of which change over time, and rule out other potential explanations for the differences observed between groups,” she said.

It was important, she said, to focus on a sample of children who tend to be at risk for not developing inhibitory abilities at the same rate as their peers from higher socioeconomic backgrounds because of the motivation to find factors that could help buffer such children from these negative outcomes.

“We were able to obtain evidence that bilingualism can be a protective factor that helps children develop these cognitive abilities,” Santillán said.

“Provided that more research studies support our results, the findings we’ve obtained could have implications for policies related to bilingual education and could help encourage families to raise their children as bilingual.”
